Using Lemon 3-Zone Ride Cymbals with the Pearl Mimic Pro Drum Module

The Lemon 3-zone ride cymbal is generally compatible with the Pearl Mimic Pro module, as the Mimic Pro is designed to support triple-zone cymbals and is compatible with Roland-style triggers (which Lemon uses).

Here is the explanation, including a connection diagram and recommended module settings.

Connection Overview: Lemon 3-Zone Ride to Pearl Mimic Pro

A 3-zone cymbal (Bow, Edge, and Bell) requires two separate inputs on the drum module to transmit the three zones plus the choke function. The Lemon 3-zone cymbal typically has two output jacks:

  • Output 1: Carries the signals for the Bow and Edge zones, and the choke function. This is a stereo (TRS) connection.
  • Output 2 (Bell): Carries the signal for the Bell zone. This is a mono or stereo connection dedicated to the bell.

The Pearl Mimic Pro must be configured to receive these signals on the correct inputs. The best configuration is usually to use the dedicated Ride input for the Bow/Edge/Choke, and an Auxiliary input for the Bell.

The Connection Steps

  1. Bow/Edge/Choke Connection:
    • Use a Stereo TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) cable to connect the Lemon Cymbal’s main output (Output 1) to the Pearl Mimic Pro’s dedicated RIDE input. This handles your primary playing surface zones (Bow and Edge) and the cymbal choke.
  2. Bell Connection:
    • Use a Mono or Stereo cable (depending on the Lemon model, but stereo is safest) to connect the Lemon Cymbal’s Bell output (Output 2) to a Pearl Mimic Pro AUX input, such as AUX 1 or another available trigger input.

Note: The exact configuration (which output is Bow/Edge vs. Bell) can vary slightly, but this dual-cable method is the standard for non-digital 3-zone cymbals with the Mimic Pro.

Pearl Mimic Pro Trigger Settings

Once connected, you must tell the Mimic Pro what kind of trigger is plugged in and how to interpret the signals for optimal performance.

Navigate to the Trigger Settings menu on the Mimic Pro’s touchscreen. You will need to configure two separate inputs: the RIDE input and the AUX input (e.g., AUX 1).

1. RIDE Input Settings (For Bow/Edge/Choke)

ParameterRecommended SettingExplanation
Trigger TypeRoland CY-15R (or similar Roland/Generic 3-Zone)This is the closest native triple-zone profile, as Lemon cymbals use a Roland-compatible design.
Zone AssignRideEnsure the input is assigned to the Ride drum instrument in your kit.
Bell AssignNONECrucial: Since the bell is on a separate AUX input, you must disable the internal Bell assignment for the RIDE input to prevent false or double-triggering.
Input GainAdjust by ear (Start around 10-12)Tap the cymbal bow and edge with medium force. Adjust the gain until the velocity meter reliably reaches near maximum without peaking from ghost notes or double-hitting.
CrosstalkAdjust as neededHit the Ride only and check for triggering on other nearby pads (especially the AUX 1 Bell input). Increase the crosstalk setting if you see other pads trigger.

2. AUX 1 Input Settings (For Bell)

ParameterRecommended SettingExplanation
Trigger TypeSingle Piezo (or specific Roland type if available)Set to the simplest type that can read the piezo signal. Sometimes the “Roland Pad” or “CY-5/8/12” profile works best.
Zone AssignRide BellThis assigns the trigger signal to the Bell of the Ride instrument.
Input GainAdjust by ear (Start around 10-15)Tap the Bell only. Adjust the gain until the velocity meter is responsive to light hits but doesn’t peak easily on hard hits. This is often more sensitive than the bow/edge.
CrosstalkAdjust as neededHit the Bow/Edge only (RIDE input) and check if the Bell (AUX 1) triggers. Increase the crosstalk on the RIDE input’s setting if this occurs.
